Group Visits

If you have a MGLG Member with your Group, you can always shelter from the rian in the Viewing Hide!

We welcome visiting Groups who come to enjoy the wildlife of the Reserve or just to walk in the quiet picturesque Blackwater Valley. Winter visits are popular with Bird Watching groups because of the variety of wintering wildfowl.

If you are organising a group visit to the Moor Green Lakes Reserve for any reason, it is strongly recommended to contact the Site Liaison Officer to check that you will not clash with other known activities (although not all such visiting groups will be known about). Organised visits by bird watching or walking groups particularly should avoid Work Party days, because most of the wildfowl is displaced for the day. If in doubt, please phone or email well in advance of your proposed Group visit.

The various wildlife pages try to give an indication of what you will see at various times throughout the year. Also the monthly Bird Summaries give an indication of birds seen in the previous months. The reports of previous years give an indication of what might be seen in the coming months.

Car Parking

The main Car Park off Lower Sandhurst Road can accommodate from 15 to 17 cars depending on how sensibly people park. Unfortunately there is no other reasonable parking nearby. The Alternative Parking is a mile away on Mill Lane and holds a similar number of cars. The plans for the extension of the Reserve include further parking at the west of the site, on Longwater Road, although it is likely to be a few years before this is in place.

The main car park at Moor Green LakesThere have been several occasions when the Moor Green Lakes Car Park has been full, causing people to park in unsuitable places, causing obstructions for local farmers and residents. Vehicle access to the Reserve through the car park has been blocked on a number of occasions. Access is required at all times, not just in emergencies, but for contractor’s vehicles and volunteer Work Parties.  On Sunday 10th February the 20 strong volunteer work party was delayed for 45 minutes while vehicles were diverted to an alternative access point because of a thoughtlessly parked visitor’s car.

Discussions are proceeding on extending the main car park, however local resident's concerns need to be addressed, planning permission is required, and money has to be found.
